Guide to betting on cricket

Cricket betting markets on the short game

  • Match-winner – Win or draw or win at full time
  • 1st wicket method – How will the first wicket of the game be taken – Caught, Bowled. LBW, Stumped, Run Out, Other.
  • A fifty in the match – Yes or No
  • A hundred in the match – Yes or no
  • Over/under scores – Set at different levels for each game at .5, pick if you think the innings or the match will go over this score or stay under. For example, over 170.5 market, 171 or above is over, 170 or under is under.
  • Team to win the toss – Bizarre cricket betting market that for us is pointless to bet on.
  • Highest opening partnership – A great one to bet on the IPL, which teams opening 2 will score the most before the first wicket?
  • Match sixes – Which team will hit the most 6s, or will it be a tie?
  • Man of the Match – Who  will be awarded the man of the match – Where one is awarded (Usually IPL, one day and tests)
  • Top Bowler – Whish bowler will take the most wickets
  • Top batsman – Who will be the highest scoring batsman
  • Most run out betting – Who will get the highest number of run outs in a game – This market is only available on shorter versions of the game such as 20:20 rather than test matches.
  • Fall of 1st wicket over or under – Will the first wicket fall before a set number of runs for the opening partnership. In the IPL we’d say this is one of the best value markets in cricket betting.
  • Over under wides – How many wides will be bowled.

Here’s how they look

Cricket betting markets for the short game

Cricket betting markets for the long game

The longer test game opens up different markets than the simple match game. Here are some of the ones available currently –

  • Top runscorer – This is for the 3 or 5 match series
  • Top bowler – Again this is for the series
  • Correct score – What will the final score across the series be

Formats of the game

Cricket betting guideOf course before you get started its important to get to grips with the different opportunities presented by the varying formats of the game; test matches, one day events and Twenty20.

Each of these will require subtle differences between betting styles, with the fast nature of Twenty20 varying wildly from that of test match cricket, which takes place over a number of days.

Of course individual players, and even teams, will favour certain formats of the game so it is worth studying the form book specifically relating to your format before you place your wager.

And with test cricket often being seen as the most prestigious form of the game, this is most likely where you’ll see specials – especially surrounding large events such as the Ashes.

Cricket events

As mentioned earlier, cricket is played the year round but you’re best off making a note of some of the bigger events on the calendar which are more likely to feature promotions and special odds to entice punters.

The Ashes is undoubtedly the biggest event in cricket, taking international teams from Australia and England and pitting them against each other for one of the most prestigious prizes in sport. It was once dominated by the Aussies, but recent encounters have been much more evenly matched.

The ICC World Cup and ICC World Twenty20 also attract punters in their droves as the stand out international events for each format. The World Twenty20 was held in India earlier this year and interest was high, particularly as England managed to make it through to the final before being defeated by the hosts.

Finally you’ll likely want to keep an eye on the Indian Premier League, which essentially acts as the NFL of the cricketing world.

India is where all the world’s top players are currently stationed and as a result most bookies offer a wealth of markets, including in play options, from each match. You can check the latest cricket figures on the BBC cricket website here!
